The Roman Catholic Church and minor basilica is also simply titled as Salute and is widely popular across Europe with the same name. The Santa fMaria della Salute is located at Punta della Dogans in the Dorsoduro sestiere of Venice.

Things to see

At Santa Maria della Salute there are several things to see and discover. The octagonal building is very vast and made of 100,000 wooden piles. It is full of Marian symbolism and constructed of Istrian stone and such bricks which are covered with marble dust.

The giant dome on the top represents crown of Mother Mary, the cavernous interior as womb and eight ponts of her symbolic star is related by the eight sides of the structure.


About one-third population of Venice died in 1630 and 1631 by severe plague. Italian architecture Andrea Palladio was asked to design architectural design to the assault similar to same in 1575 and 1576. The church was dedicated to Virgin Mary and decided Senate would visit each year. Hence Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin is celebrated on every November 21. It is called as Festa della Madonna della Salute and parade takes place from San Marco to the Salute.

The ByZantine designs inside is remarkable with architectural elements and full of Marian symbolism. It has octagonal interior with eight radiating chapels on outer row. The most represented artist there is Titan, who painted St Mark Enthroned with SS Cosmas, Damian, Sebastian and Roch, the altarpiece of the sacristy; ceiling paintings of David and Goliath, Abraham and Isaac and Cain and Abel; eight tondi of the Doctors of the Church and the Evangelists; and Pentecost in the nave.

How to reach

The church is located just opposite of the Grand Canal from St. Mark’s Square and close to the triangular tip of the Dorsoduro quarter. It is at a walking distance from either Peggy Guggenheim Collection or from the Accademia art gallery.

You also get a Salute station between the San Marco waterbus stop and Santa Maria del Giglio if you take the Grand Canal’s scenic No.1 vaporetto route. You can also take a small gondola ferry from Campo del Traghetto in San Marco and land on the Dorsoduro side. From there the church is just at a walking distance.

Don’t forget to visit Dogana di Mare next door after visiting the church. Also, a little more walking will take you to the tip of Dorsoduro and again stroll down the Zattere to get nice view of Giudecca.

It is open daily between 9 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from April to September.

From October to March Santa Maria della Salute is open daily between 9 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
