Visitors to Stratford, Ontario will discover a multitude of attractions. Of course, there is the world famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival, but the small city boasts so much more than one might think!

Stratford Main Attractions

Stratford-born journalist Tom Patterson proposed his idea of a Stratford Festival Theatre in 1952. In 1953, the Theatre held its first inaugural performance of Richard III on July 13. The current 2010 season lists 12 productions including Peter Pan and Kiss Me, Kate. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is open from early April until the end of October.


Gallery Stratford shows contemporary exhibitions, but also historical art. A refreshing twist on the indoor gallery is Art in the Park, located outdoors along the Avon River. Weather permitting, this showcase of art includes works of regional artists.

For people who are interested in the area’s history, look no further than the Stratford-Perth Museum! The museum has an exhibit on Towns of Perth County as well as the county’s military history and settler info. Admission is by donation only and the Museum is open year round.

Downtown Stratford Shopping and Dining

In downtown Stratford, visitors are presented with many unique shops that cannot be found elsewhere. For example, MacLeod’s Scottish Shop sells items directly from Scotland. P’Lovers is a store that offers environmentally friendly alternatives in clothing, personal care, bed, bath and more. Bradshaw’s specializes in gifts, tableware and kitchen items. Perhaps most known is Rheo Thompson’s, Stratford’s first chocolate shop, which offers handmade chocolate and candy as well as gifts for many occasions. These examples are only a few!


Stratford is also home to many restaurants and bistros that offer both fine and casual dining. Pazzo Ristorante Bar and Grill offers two levels of culinary expertise. Rene’s Bistro has affordable romantic cuisine. Perhaps one prefers a more casual atmosphere? Why not try Fellini’s? Dishes at Fellini’s are Italian and Mediterranean-inspired and the restaurant offers good quality meals for the cost. Stratford also hosts a few coffee shops. Tango Café and Grill offers a full dining menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Balzac’s Coffee offers a fresh café atmosphere and sells typical coffee shop fare.
