More about Thailand

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. The king of Thailand is Maha Vajiralongkorn since 2016. The former king was Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned by the title of Rama IX. He was the longest reigning monarch all over the world. He was born in 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts where his father, Prince Mahidol of Songkhla, was studying medicine at Harvard University and his mother was learning to nurse. He was reassigned to the king position after his elder brother, King Ananda, was murdered by shooting at the Grand Palace. The king and the royal family is very popular among the Thai folks. They do not use the Thai treasury at all since they pay their own due to income from their property. Despite on that, they have started many rural projects, from the Flying Doctor programme that was initiated by the king’s late mother to arts and supported by the present Queen Sirikit. These all show the good relationship family to the people.

Thailand is an inviting destination with much to offer travelers, whether they are looking for culture, history or sun-and-surf. The most popular travel destinations in Thailand, apart from the capital Bangkok, include Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya. Before traveling to Thai write your own list of destinations to be visited during the trip.

There are still hill tribes still live in the northern part of Thailand, especially in the hinterland north of Chiang Mai, in places close to the border of Myanmar. There, they continue to practice their age-old customs and wear their traditional attires. Among the tribes are the Akha, the Hmong, the Mien, the Lahu, the Lisu, to name a few. Each has its clothing – their tribal uniform – which allows them to differ by tribe, but also by their social status, age, marital status, and their village. Perhaps the most intriguing is the Padaung, well-known as the people with long neck because the local women wear brass rings around their arms, legs, and necks. Although this custom is diminishing, many have once again taken up this practice for the commercial purpose.

Some of the ancient cities and kingdoms to have flourished in Thailand were founded on the north, chiefly between Sukhothai and the northern border. These old cities can reflect the picture of life in Thailand many years ago. Although most of these buildings are now in ruins, they have been preserved in heritage parks such as Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai.

The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is a modern big city, as the business as the geographical center of the state. The beach resorts of Pattaya and Hua Hin are located the nearest. Going further east, we come upon Khmer ruins within the border of Cambodia. Among these are Prasat Hin Phimai and Prasat Phanom Wan, both outside Nakhon Ratchasima.
