Its appearance and purpose has changed greatly throughout the years, with additions and restorations helping the tower warp to fulfil its varying roles as palace, fortress and prison. The Tower of London remained a Royal residence until political and military leader Oliver Cromwell demolished the old palatial buildings in the 17th century. The place was cleaned up and the moat, increasingly smelly and sluggish, was drained and converted into a dry ditch by 1845.
